Lucre. Filthy Lucre.

In case you weren't paying attention, there's something new going on around here.

No, it's not just the three column look, although that was the prequel. And you know what they say: where there are three columns...soon there may be [Whispered] advertising.

You know what that means.

Why? Why am I doing such a thing?

I'm doing it for The Children. The children are in need of a college fund.

Tell your friends: there's a new BlogHer Blogger in town.

I've been thinking about doing the same thing. What does it entail. Or I suppose I could just go to the site and find out for myself!

It's pretty easy, but not exactly simple, if that makes any sense.

First you have to join BlogHer and get your blog listed on their blogroll. Then you apply online for advertising and then, if they accept you, you apply in hardcopy, faxing off assorted docs back to the BlogHer team. You tell them what you like and dislike, what your blog is about and what you will and won't advertise.

Then you promise that they get their ad in the top 768 pixels of your blog, that you won't have curse words in the title of your entry and once all the paperwork goes through, they provide you with code to add to your blog. Then the feed comes in and you are in business. Actual advertising. You get paid per thousand impressions minus 50%. So, I won't see a dime until I make it past $25 worth. There's an actual formula for determining how much, but it changes depending on the value of the ad itself.

I suspect it will be awhile (a loooong while) before I get a shiny check for $25. I'm not popular at all. But a little money here and there would be nice for the college fund.

This is where networking comes in. Apparently, in order to move traffic to one's site, one must go out and schmooze.

I figured that I'd try it and see how it goes.

Whaddaya think? Am I a sell out? Or was it the next logical step?

Even my MIL suggested I advertise!

No I don't think you are a sell-out. Seems like a good move. You have got a great blog, you keep it updated amazingly well considering all you seem to have going on. The ads seem to be for worthy causes most of the time, which is part of why I have considered it myself. I think you have great potential at this here blog and I think you ought to be compensated in some way for what you are putting out there.

I would have MASSIVE work to do to get enough traffic to get things going and make it worth my while, if you think you aren't popular, I am barely on the radar at all, but I haven't really put myself out there either. I guess I am a little shy when it comes to letting others know I am lurking about their blogs.

Good luck! I surely hope it works out well for you. I suspect it will!

from one sell out to another, i say good for you. ;) hey, we all gotta do what we gotta do. i admire the bloggers that keep their blogs ad-free, but i need to supplement our income somehow. ;)

Oh jeez, I seem to be in the same pickle as you. I've been ad-free for years, but how would I love to actually get paid for all the time I spend on my three blogs???? Anyhow, while I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do with advertising, I am playing around with social media sites, which seem to be another good way to increase traffic. Check out my post: http://chezartz.com/?p=192

Good luck! I'll add you to my blogroll for sure and will be back soon.
