Remember this video? Dove: Evolution.
Now they have a new video called Dove: Onslaught. It's very cool, you should check it out.
Note that this time it's about protecting our daughters from the onslaught of media projected imagery about how women should appear in the ideal world. The question that always gets me is the mirror: what is this imagery also doing to our sons? Girls and women are clearly affected by the constant yammering about how women should appear. However, I would posit that men are also negatively impacted by the media's focus on women, age and sex.
Everyone loses.
The real question is this: how do we stop it or fix it? For my part, I'm working steadily on Caitlin and her attitude towards her body and self. It has also caused me to change the way that I talk about my own weight and body image.
When your 2 or 3 year old turns to you suddenly and asks you in all seriousness if you think that she's fat, it's time to check what you're saying around her. That was my wakeup call.
What are you doing?
